Indian Rivers and Waterways

Gujarat is endowed with several rivers, lakes, wells, step wells, streams, ponds and oceans. There are rivers like the Banas, Saraswati, Rupen, Meshwo, Sabarmati, Vatrak, Mahi, Vishwamitra, Dhadhar, Narmada, Kim, Tapi, Purna, Kaveri, Kankavati, Bhakhi, Aaji, Bhudar, Shetrunji, Machchhu, etc. Some rivers of north Gujarat like the Banas, Saraswati and Rupen drain into the small Rann of Kutch. That is why they are called Inland Rivers. The main rivers of Gujarat are the Narmada, Tapi, Mahi and Sabarmati. The Narmada is the longest river of Gujarat.

The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. In the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises. National Waterway No.3 from Kollam to Kottapuram, covers a distance of 205 km and runs almost parallel to the coast line of southern Kerala facilitating both cargo movement and backwater tourism.

Bhakra nangal Dam is contrcuted on River Sutlej. The dam is located in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. Nehru decribed the dams as "New Temples of Resurgent India". It is a multipurpose project.

Ground water and surface waters are the major sources of Fresh water in India. Ground water is the water present beneath the earth's surface which can be extracted through various ways.

• Koyna dam is constructed on Koyna river which is a tributary of Krishna river.
• Koyna dam is located in Maharashtra state.
  

The river Cauvery orginates in Talakaveri of Kodgu district. The river covers a distance of about 765 km and flows through the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and finally merges into the Bay of Bengal. On its course to the Bay of Bengal, the river is joined by its tributaries, which include Shimsa, Hemavathi, Honnuhole, Arkavathi, Kapila, Lakshmana etc.

Ravi river forms the border of India and Pkistan. It is one of the five tributaries of the Indus River. It rises in the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh and empties into Chenab river in Pakistan. The waters of the Ravi River drain into the Arabian Sea.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a large-scale project on the Narmada River in India that has been the subject of significant controversy regarding environmental and social impacts.

The dam was built across Kaveri river in 1924. The kings laid the foundation for this project. It is the main source of water for Mysore districts. It has an ornamental garden attached to it.

Kothapally makes use of the masonry dam for the purpose of water for irrigation. Ralegan and Vanaparthy use percolation tanks as the source of water to increase the reserves of groundwater. This water can be used by creating walls and canals. There are no percolation tanks in the village of Vaddicherla. This results in the water scarcity which causes problems in the cultivation of paddy crops.

Venaparthy is small village situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The village is known for being free from the problems due to the water crisis. There are percolation tanks which are set up in the village which help in the collection of water in the earthen dams and recharge the groundwater in these regions. The groundwater can be used by creating wells and canals which can be used for the purpose of irrigation and this helps to obtain high yield by this type of cropping pattern. The primary source of water used for irrigation is well which recharges the water from ground reserves.

The Sapt Kosi river system in Nepal is formed by seven major tributaries, one of which is the Arun River.
