Indian and Sri Lankan Languages

Tamil is widely considered the oldest of the Dravidian languages with a continuous literary tradition spanning over 2,000 years. While Sanskrit is ancient, it's an Indo-Aryan language, and the earliest Tamil literature (Sangam literature) dates back to 300 BCE.

Hindi is the most spoken language in India by number of native speakers. It is one of India's 22 scheduled languages and serves as the official language of the central government, spoken by over 40% of the population as a first language.

The word 'chit' meaning a small note or letter is taken from Hindi. In Hindi, 'chitthi' means letter or note. The word was adopted into English during the colonial period in India. It is not from Telugu, Tamil, or Malayalam.

Huttida Habba means birthday/festival of completion in Kannada (Huttida = completed/born, Habba = festival). Subhashayagalu means greetings/wishes. This is clearly Kannada language.

Piranda naal means birthday in Tamil (pirantha = born, naal = day). Vaazhthukkal means congratulations/wishes. The phrase structure and vocabulary are distinctly Tamil.

Sri Lanka has two official languages: Sinhala (Sinhalese), spoken by about 75% of the population, and Tamil, spoken by about 25%. Tamil is also spoken by the Tamil minority as well as the Indian Tamil community. Malayalam and Telugu are not widely spoken in Sri Lanka.

The Grantha script, which evolved from the Brahmi script, was indeed influential in the development of several Southeast Asian scripts. The Pallava script (a variant of Grantha) served as the basis for scripts like Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Burmese. While Tamil and Sanskrit were culturally influential, the Grantha/Pallava script was the direct scriptural ancestor for many Southeast Asian writing systems.

Konkani is written in five different scripts: Devanagari (official script), Roman (Konni), Kannada, Malayalam, and Arabic. This linguistic flexibility reflects Konkani speakers' distribution across multiple Indian states with different literary traditions.

Devanagri script is used by Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali among others. It's an abugida script used across various Indo-Aryan languages. Gujarati uses a derived script while Bengali uses the Bengali script.

Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) is a Union Territory located within Tamil Nadu state, and Tamil is the primary language spoken by the majority of its residents. This geographical and historical fact makes Tamil the correct answer. Malayalam is spoken in Kerala and Lakshadweep, while Telugu is spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Lakshadweep is an archipelago off the Kerala coast, and Malayalam is the predominant language spoken there due to geographical and cultural proximity to Kerala. Hindi is the official language but not primarily spoken locally. Tamil is spoken in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while Telugu is spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
