Inventors and Scientific Discoveries

Joseph Gayetty invented the first commercial toilet paper in 1857 in New York. His product was 'Gayetty's Medicated Paper' sold in packs of 500 sheets with aloe vera. The other options are from completely different fields: pantyhose, traffic lights, and astronomy.

Levi Strauss, a German immigrant to America, invented and marketed blue jeans in 1873. He patented the process of riveting pants with Jacob Davis, creating durable workwear that became a cultural icon. Richard James invented the Slinky, Jansky worked with radio astronomy, and Zacharias Janssen with microscopes.

Whitcomb L. Judson invented the 'clasp locker' which later evolved into the modern zipper. He patented his device in 1893, featuring interlocking teeth that could be fastened and unfastened. Henry W. Seeley invented the electric iron, Levi Strauss invented blue jeans, and Humphry Davy is known for the safety lamp and electric arc.

Dr. Percy LeBaron Spencer invented the microwave oven in 1945 while working at Raytheon. He discovered microwave heating when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted near a magnetron. The first commercial microwave (the 'Radarange') was sold in 1947. Elijah McCoy invented lubrication systems, George de Mestral invented Velcro, and Ida Henrietta Hyde was a physiologist.

Thomas Moore, an American farmer, invented the first refrigerator in 1803 - a cedar tub insulated with rabbit skins and ice, used to transport butter to market. William Cullen demonstrated refrigeration principles in 1748 but didn't build a practical device. Edwin Budding invented the lawn mower, Jesse Reno invented the escalator.

Walter Hunt invented the safety pin in 1849 and sold the patent for $400 to pay a debt. His design featured a clasp that covered the sharp point, preventing injury. The invention was simple but highly practical and remains essentially unchanged today. Johan Lundstrom invented safety matches, Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine.

John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), is credited with inventing the sandwich. According to popular account, he was a gambler who wanted meat between bread slices to avoid greasing cards while playing. The name 'sandwich' comes from his title. Joseph Priestley discovered carbonated water, Otto Rohwedder invented sliced bread.

Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, invented tea bags around 1908 when he started sending tea samples in silk pouches to customers. Customers mistakenly brewed the tea directly in the pouches, inadvertently creating the modern tea bag. Samuel Morse invented the telegraph, Richard Drew invented Scotch tape, and Nikola Tesla was an electrical engineer.

Garrett Augustus Morgan, an African American inventor, patented the first traffic signal in 1923. His invention featured a T-shaped pole with three positions: Stop, Go, and a warning direction that allowed traffic to clear before the next signal. John Froehlich invented the tractor, John S. Thurman invented the vacuum cleaner, and Evangelista Torricelli invented the barometer.

Johann Vaaler, a Norwegian inventor, patented the paper clip in 1899 (and improved in 1901). His design was similar to the modern paper clip we use today. Coenraad Van Houten is associated with chocolate processing, John S. Thurman invented the vacuum cleaner, and William Middlebrook patented a machine for making paper clips (not the clip itself).

Brendan Eich created JavaScript in 1995 while working at Netscape Communications Corporation. He developed the language in just 10 days, and it was originally named Mocha before being renamed to JavaScript.

Ernest Rutherford, a New Zealand physicist, is known as the father of nuclear physics for discovering the atomic nucleus in 1911 through his gold foil experiment. He was the first to split the atom artificially in 1919. His groundbreaking work established the nuclear model of the atom.

Max Planck is credited with discovering the quantum theory of light in 1900 through his work on blackbody radiation. He introduced the concept that energy is emitted in discrete packets called 'quanta.' Einstein later expanded quantum theory with his work on the photoelectric effect, but Planck founded it.

The Michelson-Morley experiment in 1887 disproved the existence of luminiferous ether as the medium for light propagation. Their famous null result showed that the speed of light is constant in all directions, contradicting ether theory. This paved the way for Einstein's special relativity.

Heike Kamerlingh Onnes achieved ultra-low temperatures approaching absolute zero in 1908, discovering superconductivity in mercury in 1911. He was the first to liquefy helium and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1913 for his work. Isaac Asimov was a science fiction writer, while Michelson and Morley were involved in ether experiments.
