Inventors and Scientific Discoveries

The electric chair was invented by dentist Alfred P. Southwick in 1881. He developed the concept as a more humane alternative to hanging for capital punishment, drawing inspiration from his dental work with electricity. The first electric chair was built in Buffalo, New York, and first used in 1890.

J.J. Thomson discovered the electron in 1897 through cathode ray tube experiments. He determined that cathode rays were negatively charged particles much smaller than atoms, which he called 'corpuscles' - later named electrons.

Charles Goodyear discovered the vulcanization process in 1839, which transforms natural rubber into a more durable material by adding sulfur and applying heat. This process revolutionized rubber manufacturing by making rubber stable and useful. Radial tires were invented much later (1940s) by Michelin, and artificial rubber was developed through entirely different chemical processes.

Dennis Ritchie created the C programming language at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. George Stephenson invented the steam locomotive, James Watt improved the steam engine, and James Naismith invented basketball.

James Gosling created Java at Sun Microsystems in the mid-1990s. Brendan Eich created JavaScript, and the other names are not programming language creators.

Rasmus Lerdorf created PHP in 1994. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, and the other names are not associated with programming language creation.

Christopher Latham Sholes invented the first practical typewriter in the 1860s. Shockley worked on transistors, Pascal on calculating machines, and Waterman on fountain pens.

Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine in the 1830s, considered the first general-purpose computer concept. Edison worked on electricity and lighting, not computers.

Laszlo Biro patented the ballpoint pen in 1938. Waterman founded a fountain pen company but didn't invent ballpoint pens.

Microsoft PowerPoint was originally developed under the name 'Presenter' for Macintosh in 1987. Microsoft acquired it and renamed it PowerPoint before its official release. The name change reflected the software's purpose better.

Scott Fahlman, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, first suggested using the :-) emoticon to mark humorous posts on a university bulletin board in 1982. This is widely documented as the first use of the smiley emoticon in digital communication. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, and Dennis Ritchie developed the Unix operating system.

G.N. Ramachandran proposed the triple-helical structure for collagen in 1954. His model explained collagen's unique properties and stability, distinct from the alpha-helix and beta-sheet structures in other proteins.

Marie Curie (note spelling error in option as 'Marrie') was the first person and first scientist to win two Nobel Prizes: Physics in 1903 and Chemistry in 1911. Neither Newton nor Einstein won two Nobel Prizes. This is a foundational fact in Nobel Prize history.

The term 'googol' (which inspired the name Google) was coined by Milton Sirotta, but it was popularized in the book 'Mathematics and the Imagination' by Edward Kasner and James Newman.
