Indian Regional Languages

Bengali is the most widely spoken language in the state of Tripura, reflecting its cultural and historical ties to the region.

Hindi is the official language of Himachal Pradesh, and Pahadi is a group of dialects widely spoken across the state. While other languages are spoken in India, these represent the primary linguistic identity of the region.

Garo and Khasi are the primary indigenous languages spoken by the tribal communities in the state of Meghalaya.

Urdu has historically been the official language of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, serving as a lingua franca for administrative and official purposes.

Indo-Aryan languages, which include Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and others, are spoken by the largest number of people in India compared to Dravidian, Austro-Asiatic, or Sino-Tibetan groups.

Dogri is a language primarily spoken in the Jammu region of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

People in Western India speak  Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Rajasthani and Hindi. Gujarati is mainly spoken in the state of Gujarat, Marathi in the state of Maharashtra and Rajasthani in the state of Rajasthan. Konkani is widely spoken in Maharashtra and Goa whereas Hindi is spoken in most parts of Western India.

Hindi is widely spoken in north India. But besides Hindi, Punjabi, Sindhi and Kashmiri languages are also spoken. Local dialects such as Bhojpuri is spoken in eastern Uttar Pradesh while Bihari is spoken in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Assamese, Bengali and Oriya are commonly spoken by the people of Eastern India. Hindi and English are also spoken marginally. Assamese is spoken in Assam, Bengali in West Bengal and Oriya is spoken in the state of Orissa.

Literacy rates point to demographic shifts in the years to come. The 2001 Census showed Jains, with a literacy rate of 94.1%, the most educated. They were followed by Christians at 80.3%, Buddhists at 72.7%, Sikhs at 69.4%, Hindus at 65.1% and Muslims at 59.1%. 

The phrase ‘unity in diversity’ is coined by Jawaharlal Nehru. This term is very appropriate to describe India, which is, in spite of being diverse with many languages, religions, castes, creed etc. there is a feeling of oneness among people. The phrase was used by Jawaharlal Nehru in his book ‘Discovery of India’ because all Indians share the same national pride of having India as their motherland in spite of many differences.

Bengali is a langauge spoken mostly in Bengal and by Bengalis. Bengali is now recognised as a language derived from Sanskrit . Most languages India had their origin in Sanskrit

Telugu is a Dravidian language primarily spoken in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in southern India. It is not a local language of Rajasthan, where Indo-Aryan languages like Marwari, Shekhawati, and Harauti are prevalent.
