Sinhagad (Lion Fort) was renamed in honor of Tanaji Malusare, who sacrificed his life recapturing this fort from the Mughals in 1670. Originally called Kondhana, the fort was strategically important near Pune. Tanaji's famous words 'Gadh ala, pan sinh gela' (The fort is captured, but the lion is lost) commemorate this sacrifice.
