The electronics industry in India started with radio manufacturing in the 1850s. The setting up of the Indian Telephone Industry (ITI) in 1950 at Bangalore gave a boost to this industry. It now meets the needs of post and telegraph, defense, railways, electricity boards, etc. ITI now has the main manufacturing units located at Bangalore, Naini, Rai Bareli, Mankapur, Palakkad and Srinagar.

Chandrayaan-1 was India's first mission to the moon. Chandrayan -1 was launched in 2008, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota.

Electronics Corporation of India Limited was setup under the Department of Atomic Energy on 11th April, 1967 with a view to generate a strong  indigenous capability in the field of professional grade electronics.
