Under the democratic style of leadership, the leader encourages active participation and consultation with subordinates in decision-making. This style fosters open communication and allows team members sufficient freedom to share ideas. In contrast, autocratic leaders make decisions unilaterally, and free-rein leaders delegate almost all decision-making authority.

In the Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid, the authority-compliance style (9,1) is characterized by a high concern for production and efficiency, but a low concern for people. The country club style (1,9) represents the opposite, with high concern for people and low concern for production. Impoverished management (1,1) has low concern for both, while middle-of-the-road (5,5) maintains a balance.

This specific definition of leadership was formulated by George R. Terry, a well-known management theorist. He emphasized that leadership is an active process of influencing individuals to willingly cooperate toward shared objectives. Other theorists like Koontz and Weihrich have different, though related, definitions.

Leadership is fundamentally characterized by the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide others toward achieving high levels of performance. While organizing tasks and communicating are valuable managerial skills, they do not capture the core essence of leadership. True leadership focuses on mobilizing people through inspiration.

Individuals who engage in political behavior in organizations typically exhibit a high need for power, a high ability to self-monitor, and an internal locus of control. High charisma is a leadership trait that helps inspire others but is not a primary predictor of calculated political maneuvering. Therefore, charisma is the exception among these traits.

Leading is the core management function focused on influencing, motivating, and directing people to achieve organizational goals. Planning, organizing, and controlling are other essential functions of management but do not primarily deal with interpersonal influence. Thus, leading is the most appropriate term.

Under Section 196 of the Indian Companies Act, 2013, a managing director can be appointed for a maximum term of 5 years at a time. Since a private company that is a subsidiary of a public company is treated as a public company under the law, this 5-year limit applies. Re-appointment is permitted, but each individual term cannot exceed 5 years.

In adaptive leadership, a holding environment is a psychological space where a leader regulates stress so that adaptive work can occur. A leader does this by sequencing and prioritizing tasks to prevent overwhelming confusion while keeping enough pressure to motivate change. Eliminating all stressors or discouraging complaints entirely would prevent necessary adaptive growth.

There is no single leadership style that is universally effective for every situation. Effective leaders adapt their style (whether autocratic, democratic, or laissez-faire) based on the maturity of their followers and the specific demands of the situation. This approach is supported by situational and contingency theories of leadership.
