Fallow lands are those lands left without cultivation for one or less than one agricultural year.

Paddy and sugarcane are the two primary crops grown in Karnataka's irrigated regions, particularly in the river basins. Sugarcane requires consistent water supply, making it a staple of irrigated agriculture in the state.

Dry farming refers to agricultural techniques used in areas with low or erratic rainfall where irrigation is not available. It relies on moisture conservation in the soil to sustain crops.

Under high temperature, high humidity with sufficient rainfall and irrigation facilities, rice can be grown in any type of soil.

Paddy is a fundamental food crop in Karnataka, particularly in the coastal and Malnad regions where rainfall is abundant. It serves as a primary source of food for a large portion of the population.

Mixed farming, which involves combining crop cultivation with livestock rearing, is increasingly popular as it provides farmers with diversified income and reduces risks associated with crop failure.

Subsistence agriculture is self-sufficiency farming in which the farmers focus on growing enough food to feed themselves and their families. The output is mostly for local requirements with little or no surplus for trade. 

Rice is a crop of tropical climate. However, it is also grown successfully in humid to sub-humid regions under subtropical and temperate climate. 

Paddy, pulses, and millets are all food crops. Cotton is a cash crop (fiber crop) and does not fall into the category of food grains, making it the odd one out.

Plantation farming is an extensive commercial system is characterized by cultivation of a single cash crop in plantations of estates on a large scale. 

Commercial farming is characterized by the production of crops primarily for sale in domestic and international markets, rather than for personal consumption.

In the plains of Karnataka, where irrigation facilities are available, the transplanting method is commonly used for paddy cultivation to ensure higher yields compared to broadcasting.

Irrigated districts provide a consistent water supply, which is essential for the healthy growth and high-quality yield of paddy, compared to rain-fed or dry land farming.

Common kharif crops are rice (paddy), millets, maize.

Agricultural data for Karnataka shows that the majority of the paddy crop is sown during the Kharif season, which corresponds to the June-August period, accounting for about 70% of the total.
