Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL), formerly known as the Mysore Iron and Steel Industries Limited (MSIL), was established on January 18, 1923 by Sir M Visvesvaraya. It is now a steel plant under the jurisdiction of the Steel Authority of India Limited.

Sir M. Visveswaraiah was a visionary engineer and statesman who strongly advocated for industrialization as the path to prosperity for the state.

M.S.K. cotton mill, was set up in 1884 at Kalaburagi. Later, big cotton textile mills like Binny Mills and Minerva Mills of Bengaluru, K.R.Mill of Mysuru, Cotton Mill of Davanagere etc. were established before independence.

Under the leadership of the Wodeyar dynasty and Sir M. Visveswaraiah, the Princely State of Mysuru was widely considered a model state for its industrial and social progress.

Karnataka is recognized as the second-largest exporter of textiles in India, following major hubs like Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu.

• The Karnataka government had announced its policy Suvarna Vastra Neethi in 2008 for a period of five years.
• The investors are interested in investing in the areas of spinning, weaving, processing and manufacturing of technical textiles.
