Postwar US Foreign Policy

The Manhattan Project was a top-secret research and development program during World War II that produced the first atomic weapons. It was led by the United States with support from the UK and Canada, resulting in the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The U.S. invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 because the Taliban government harbored Al Qaeda leaders. Iraq was invaded later in 2003 for different reasons, while Yemen and Pakistan were not the primary targets of the initial post-9/11 response.

President Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) in 1983, which was quickly nicknamed 'Star Wars' for its ambitious plan to develop space-based missile defense systems. The Vietnam War (1955-1975) is widely considered America's worst military defeat and is also known as the Second Indochina War. The Korean War ended in stalemate, Pearl Harbour was an attack not a war, and the Gulf War was a US victory.

The Korean War was fought from 1950 to 1953 between North Korea (with Chinese and Soviet support) and South Korea (with U.N. and U.S. support). The war began on June 25, 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, and ended with an armistice agreement on July 27, 1953 that created the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The other date ranges are historically incorrect.

The Geneva Accords of 1954 ended the First Indochina War and temporarily partitioned Vietnam at the 17th parallel. This division was meant to lead to reunification after elections, but the elections never occurred and Vietnam remained divided until 1975.

The Manhattan Project was the code name for the US research and development effort to produce nuclear weapons during World War II. It began in 1942 and involved over 130,000 people at secret sites across the US.

The Aioi Bridge served as the precise aiming point for the B-29 Enola Gay on its mission to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It was chosen because it was easily recognizable from the air. The bomb actually detonated approximately 550 feet southeast of the bridge.
