Mountains, Hills, and Trekking Geography

Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world at 8,849 meters, is located in Nepal in the Mahalangur Himalaya range. While the border with China runs through the summit, the mountain itself is in Nepal.

Mount Abu is situated in the Aravalli Range, which is the oldest mountain range in India. It runs approximately 800 kilometers through Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

Namche Bazaar is known as the gateway to Mount Everest, located in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It's the last major town before Everest Base Camp and serves as the acclimatization stop for climbers. Solukhumbu is the district, Khumbu is the region, and Langtang is a different trekking area.

The Western Ghats mountain range is locally called 'Sahyadri' in Maharashtra. Sahya Parvatham and Sahyan are related terms (Sahya is the Sanskrit name), while Santha Parvatham is incorrect.

Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth, with the lowest recorded temperature of -89.2°C (-128.6°F) at Vostok Station. Drass is one of the coldest inhabited places in India. The Arctic region is cold but not as extreme as Antarctica. Dalol is actually the hottest place.

The Aravalli Range is India's oldest mountain range, approximately 350 million years old. It stretches from Gujarat through Rajasthan to Haryana. The Himalayas are geologically much younger (approximately 50 million years old).

The Western Ghats mountain range is specifically called Sahyadris in Maharashtra, meaning 'benevolent mountains' in Sanskrit. This northern segment of the Western Ghats runs parallel to the coastline and includes famous peaks like Kalsubai and Mahabaleshwar.

Himachal Pradesh literally means 'Region of snowy mountains' - 'Him' means snow, 'achal' means mountain or lap (of the Himalayas), and 'Pradesh' means region or province. This refers to the state's location in the western Himalayas known for perennial snow-capped peaks.
