The Nilgiri Hills literally mean 'Blue Mountains' in Tamil and Malayalam languages. The name comes from the bluish flowers of the Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthianus) plant that blooms in the region once every 12 years, covering the hills in a blue haze. The Himalayas, Aravali Range, and Shiwaliks do not have this name meaning.
