Indian Rivers and Waterways

The Red Fort is strategically located along the Yamuna River in Delhi. This geographical positioning provided both defensive advantages and water access for the Mughal rulers. The other rivers listed are important Indian waterways but not associated with the Red Fort.

Goa is located along the Mandovi River, with its capital Panaji situated on the river's banks. The Mandovi is one of Goa's major rivers, flowing through the heart of the state. While Goa has multiple rivers including the Zuari, the Mandovi is the most significant and is where Panaji is located. Ganga flows through the north, Gomati in Uttar Pradesh, and Sabarmati in Gujarat.

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is built on the banks of the Musi River. The historic Old City is situated on its southern bank, and the river divides Hyderabad into northern and southern parts.

Kolkata (Calcutta) is situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, a distributary of the Ganges. The Hooghly is crucial to Kolkata's history as a major port city and continues to be important for commerce in the region.

Jamshedpur (Tatanagar) is situated on the banks of the Subarnarekha River, which flows through the city. The river's name means 'streak of gold' in Sanskrit, and it passes through Jharkhand and West Bengal before entering the Bay of Bengal.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is situated on both banks of the Jhelum River in the Kashmir Valley. The river flows through the heart of the city and is central to its picturesque landscape and Dal Lake system.

Baghdad is situated on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. The Tigris flows through Iraq and was crucial to ancient Mesopotamian civilizations. Baghdad was founded in 762 AD on the Tigris's banks for strategic and commercial reasons. The Nile flows through Egypt, Yangtze through China, and Tagus through Portugal/Spain.

Delhi is primarily located on the western bank of the Yamuna River, a major tributary of the Ganges. The Yamuna flows through Delhi and has been historically significant, with several monuments including the Taj Mahal located along its banks. Old Delhi was founded on the Yamuna's eastern bank. The Ganga, Sindhu (Indus), and Sutlej are different rivers.

Alexandria is a major port city in Egypt, situated on the western edge of the Nile Delta along the Mediterranean coast. While the Nile itself doesn't flow directly through Alexandria, the city depends on the Nile Delta and its distributaries for freshwater. The Tigris flows through Iraq and Turkey, while the Tagus runs through Spain and Portugal.

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is situated on the east bank of the Hooghly River, which is a distributary of the Ganges. The Hooghly flows through the city and has been crucial to its development as a major port and commercial center. The Brahmaputra flows through Assam far to the east, while the main Ganges passes west of Kolkata.

Patna, the capital of Bihar, is located on the southern bank of the Ganges River. The city has grown along the river's banks and relies on it for trade and transportation. The Yamuna joins the Ganges at Allahabad, far upstream from Patna. The Saraswati is a mythical/ancient river, and the Chenab flows through Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea, which is one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on land at approximately 430 meters below sea level.

Jog Falls in Karnataka is the highest waterfall in India with a drop of 253 meters. It's a segmented waterfall created by the Sharavathi River. Chinchoti, Aatirapalli, and Rimni Falls are not India's highest.

The Ganga River is called Padma in Bangladesh. The Padma joins the Jamuna River and later merges with the Meghna to form the Meghna estuary before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. The Meghna and Tista are separate river systems.

The Sutlej River originates in Tibet (China), not in India. Beas, Chenab, and Ravi all originate within Indian territory or flow through India. The Sutlej is a tributary of the Indus river system.
