Indian Regional Languages

The French word for 'English' is 'Anglais'. Hindi 'Angrez/Angrezi' comes from this French word. 'Inglés' is the Galician/Spanish word. 'Inglese' is Italian. 'Engels' is Dutch. The French term 'Anglais' entered Hindi during medieval interactions between French-speaking traders and Indian kingdoms.

Bengali is the official and most widely spoken language of Bangladesh, spoken by about 98% of the population. It is a major world language with over 200 million speakers. Urdu, Hindi, and Arabic are not main languages of Bangladesh, though Urdu is understood by some due to historical ties with Pakistan.

Bengali is spoken in West Bengal (where it's the official language), Tripura (also official language), parts of Assam (especially Barak Valley), and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (by Bengali settlers). Mizoram's major languages are Mizo and English, with limited Bengali speakers in border areas.

Mauritius has a significant population of Indian descent, and Bhojpuri is widely spoken there due to historical migration of indentured laborers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Punjab is in India where Bhojpuri is not prevalent, Namibia is in Africa with different languages, and Gujarat has its own language.

India has NO national language according to its Constitution. Hindi is an official language (along with English), but it is not the national language. The Constitution designates Hindi in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union, but this does not make it the national language. This is a common misconception.

English is the official language of Meghalaya under the Official Languages Act, used for government and administrative purposes. While Khasi and Garo are widely spoken indigenous languages of the state, English serves as the official link language and medium of instruction.
