Indian Literature and Texts

The four chronological periods of Hindi literature are: Adikal (early period, 10th-14th century), Bhaktikal (devotional period, 14th-17th century), Ritikal (classical/ornamental period, 17th-19th century), and Adhunikakal (modern period, late 19th century onwards). Each period represents distinct literary themes and styles.

'Jana' (meaning tribe or people) is the most frequently occurring political term in Rig Veda, appearing approximately 275 times. It refers to the tribal unit as the basic political organization. 'Vis' (settlement/clan) appears about 170 times, while 'Rastra' (kingdom/territory) appears much later.

The Rig-Veda is the oldest extant Indic text, composed between 1500-1200 BCE. It is the oldest of the four Vedas and one of the oldest extant texts in any Indo-European language. The Zend Avesta is the primary collection of religious texts of Zoroastrianism (also called Parsism or Parsi religion), containing the teachings of the prophet Zoroaster (Zarathustra). The Talmud is central to Judaism, the Upanishads are Hindu philosophical texts, and The Analects are the sayings of Confucius.

Thirikadugam (medicine) is a classical Tamil Siddha formulation containing sukku (dry ginger), milagu (pepper), and thippili (long pepper). Kadugu (mustard) is not part of this traditional medicine composition. The text notes it cures diseases and the poem metaphorically 'cures the mind.'

Ayurveda (meaning 'science of life' in Sanskrit) is the ancient Indian system of medicine and health. While it's technically an Upaveda (supplementary text) derived from Atharvaveda rather than one of the four main Vedas, it's the only option directly focused on health and cure. The four Vedas are Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.

Constanzo Beschi (1680-1747), an Italian Jesuit missionary, was known as Veeramamunivar in Tamil. He made significant contributions to Tamil literature including writing the Tembavani epic poem.

Tripitaka (Pali Canon) is the primary sacred text of Buddhism, containing the Buddha's teachings organized into three 'baskets' (pitakas). Upanishads and Vedas are Hindu sacred texts, while Jatakas are stories about Buddha's previous lives but not the main scripture.

Zend Avesta is the sacred text of Zoroastrianism (Parsi religion), containing prayers, hymns, and teachings of the prophet Zoroaster. The Bible is Christian, the Koran (Quran) is Islamic, and Guru Granth Sahib is the Sikh holy scripture. Parsis are followers of Zoroastrianism who fled Persia and settled in India.
