Indian Honours and Awards

Jignesh Shah, founder of Multi Com Exchange (MCX), received the US-India businessman of the year award. He was recognized for his contributions to financial markets infrastructure and commodity trading in India.

G. Sankara Kurup, a renowned Malayalam poet, received the first Jnanpith Award in 1965 for his poetic work 'Odakkuzhal'. The Jnanpith Award is India's highest literary honor, given annually for outstanding contribution to Indian literature. T.S. Bandopadhaya, Uma Shankar Joshi, and Sumitranandan Pant were all Jnanpith recipients but not the first.

The Feroze Gandhi Award is an annual award given to recognize outstanding contributions and excellence in the field of journalism in India.

The Bharat Ratna was first awarded in 1954 to three individuals: C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and Dr. C.V. Raman. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a renowned philosopher and served as the first Vice President of India.

Palagummi Sainath won the 2007 Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts for his reporting on rural poverty and social inequality in India. The option shows his name in reverse order as 'Salonga Palagummi'. Kiran Bedi won in 2002 for government service, Arundhati Roy is a Booker Prize winner (not Magsaysay), and Sandeep Pandey won in 2002 for community leadership.

Mahabir Pun from Nepal won the 2007 Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership for his work bringing wireless internet to remote mountain villages. Kiran Bedi won earlier (2002), Arundhati Roy has not won a Magsaysay, Sandeep Pandey won in 2002, and Palagummi Sainath won in 2007 but for journalism.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in the field of cinema. It is presented annually by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to recognize outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

This award is given for the Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games category.

John Kenneth Galbraith was a prominent American economist and diplomat who served as the US Ambassador to India. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2001 for his contributions to strengthening Indo-US relations. The other economists listed are Nobel laureates but did not receive this specific Indian honor.

The Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science is an award instituted by UNESCO for exceptional skill in presenting scientific ideas to the public. The Bharatendu Harishchandra Awards are given by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, to promote original creative writing in Hindi on subjects related to mass communication.

Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his work in welfare economics and social choice theory. He was the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in this specific field. His research significantly influenced the understanding of poverty and famine.
