In 1911, during the British Raj, the capital of India was shifted from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi to be more centrally located and easier to administer from northern India.

Greater Mumbai is India's most populous city with its metropolitan area housing over 20 million people. While Delhi's urban agglomeration is larger, Mumbai city proper has the highest population within municipal limits.
