Roald Amundsen (Captain Amundsen) was the first person to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911. He was a Norwegian explorer who beat Robert Falcon Scott's British expedition to the pole. Sir Edmund Hillary is famous for conquering Mount Everest, not the South Pole.
