Historical Explorations and Expeditions

Christopher Columbus discovered the West Indies islands in 1492 while attempting to find a western route to Asia. Alexander and Vasco da Gama explored different regions and time periods.

Roald Amundsen (note: option spells it 'Amundson') led the first expedition to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911. Robert Peary claimed to reach the North Pole. Robert Falcon Scott reached the South Pole a month after Amundsen, and his team perished on the return journey.

Ferdinand Magellan named the Pacific Ocean in 1520 during his circumnavigation expedition. He called it 'Mar Pacifico' (peaceful sea) because of the calm waters he encountered after sailing through the stormy Strait of Magellan. Diaz, da Gama, and Columbus were other explorers but not associated with naming the Pacific.

Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, reached Calicut on the Malabar Coast of India in 1498. This was the first recorded voyage from Europe to India via the Cape of Good Hope, opening the sea route from Europe to Asia. James Cook, Magellan, and Ptolemy were not associated with this specific voyage to India.

Fahein was a Chinese Buddhist monk and scholar who traveled to India in the 5th century CE (around 399-412 CE) to obtain Buddhist scriptures and visit holy sites. His travel records provide valuable historical information about ancient India.

Phu Dorjee became the first Indian to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen on May 5, 1984. Tenzing Norgay was the first to summit Everest (with Edmund Hillary) but used oxygen. Nawang Gombu was the first person to summit Everest twice but also used oxygen on both ascents.

Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition that successfully circumnavigated Earth (1519-1522). Though Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his fleet continued under Juan Sebastian Elcano, completing the round trip. This proved Earth could be circled by sea and revolutionized understanding of global geography.

Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the Moon on July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 mission. Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space (1961), and Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian in space (1984).

Robert Peary, along with Matthew Henson, claimed to be the first to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909, by dog sled overland journey. Marco Polo was a medieval explorer who never reached the North Pole. Edmund Hillary was the first to climb Mount Everest. Peary's claim has been disputed by some historians, but he's widely credited as the answer.

Prince Albert II of Monaco reached the South Pole after a two-day cross-country ski trip across Antarctica in 2009. He was the first reigning monarch to visit both poles.

Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route from Europe to India in 1498 by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. This Portuguese explorer's voyage opened direct trade between Europe and Asia, ending the Arab monopoly on the spice trade.

America is named after Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), the Italian explorer who recognized that the lands Columbus encountered were a "New World" rather than part of Asia. German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller printed the name "America" on his 1507 world map in Vespucci's honor. Lord Curzon and Wellesley are British viceroys from much later periods (late 19th/early 20th century), while Vasco da Gama was the Portuguese explorer who reached India in 1498.
