Historical Dates and Events

The Kalinga War was fought in 261 BC between Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire and the kingdom of Kalinga (modern-day Odisha). This brutal conquest caused Ashoka great remorse and led to his conversion to Buddhism and non-violence. The war marked a turning point in Indian history and Ashoka's reign.

The dating of the Ramayana is debated among scholars, but most historians place its composition between the 5th and 4th century BCE (around 400 BCE). While some traditional sources suggest much earlier dates, academic consensus favors the later period. 4000 BC and 1780 BC are too early for the text as we know it.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on 18 June 1815, resulting in Napoleon's final defeat. This date is well-documented in historical records. The year was 1815, not 1855 or 1757, and it was the 18th, not the 19th of June.

The three Battles of Panipat were fought in 1526 (Babur vs. Ibrahim Lodi), 1556 (Bairam Khan/Hemu vs. Adil Shah's forces), and 1761 (Ahmad Shah Abdali vs. Marathas). Option C correctly lists all three dates in chronological order.

Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, arrived in India in 1498 when he reached Calicut (now Kozhikode) on May 20, 1498. This was the first direct sea voyage from Europe to India. Columbus reached the Americas in 1492, not India, and 1542 is much too late.

The Hindu calendar systems, particularly Vikram Samvat (starting 57 BC) and the earlier Saka Era, are among the oldest continuous calendar eras still in use. Christian Era began in 1 AD, Muslim Era in 622 CE, and Chinese calendar cycles though ancient lack a fixed epoch marker.

Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first arrived in India in 1498, leading to Portuguese merchants establishing a presence in Goa during the 16th century, specifically starting with the conquest of Goa in 1510.

Tipu Sultan was born on November 20, 1750, at Devanahalli (near Bangalore). He was the eldest son of Hyder Ali, who was then a military commander in the Mysore army. Tipu ruled Mysore from 1782 until his death in 1799 fighting the British in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War at Srirangapatna.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, the renowned Indian mathematician, was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu). Option A (1920) is actually the year he died, not born. Ramanujan made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, and continued fractions despite having little formal training.

Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor, conquered the Golconda Sultanate (Qutb Shahi dynasty) in 1687 after a prolonged siege. This marked the end of one of the last independent Deccan Sultanates. Option B (1987) and D (2010) are clearly anachronistic.

The Kurukshetra war between the Kauravas and Pandavas lasted for 18 days, as described in the Mahabharata epic. Each day saw fierce battles, and the war culminated with the defeat of the Kauravas on the 18th day. This is a well-established fact in Hindu mythology.

The Battle of Plassey was fought in 1757 between the British East India Company led by Robert Clive and the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah. This was a decisive battle that established British colonial rule in India.

Calcutta (now Kolkata) was founded on August 24, 1690, by Job Charnock, an administrator of the East India Company. He chose the location for its strategic position along the Hooghly River. 1691 and 1689 are incorrect years.

Akbar succeeded his father Humayun on February 14, 1556, when Humayun died after falling down the stairs of his library. Akbar was 13 years old and was in Kalanaur at the time.
