Antibiotics and Immunity

Enterotoxin B secreted by S.aureus causes toxic shock syndrome. 

Viruses are not affected by antibiotics as they use the biochemical mechanisms of their host.

Alpha toxin is secreted by C. perfringens. The alpha toxin is a lethal toxin and is known as phospholipase C. It increases vascular permeability and necrotising activity.

Antiseptics are substances that kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms on living tissue. While they can prevent growth, their primary purpose is to kill harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Rifampicin inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA synthesis by inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Amoxicillin, Vancomycin, Bacitracin all inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis.

This enzyme splits starch and is of importance for digestion, but not for protection.

There is no evidence that vegetarian diet leads to excess Staphylococcus infections or to poor nutrition.

Staining with crystal violet is the means by which bacteria have been classified historically. This primitive but quick (and messy when done by hand!) classification has been of practical use however, and so has survived.

Antibody may block the binding to target cell and would increase the rate of removal of toxin from the circulation by immune complex formation.

The major sources of antibiotics are bacteria.

The defensins are peptide antibiotics present in the granules in extremely high concentration.

Tetracyclines (Chloro and oxy) are broad spectrum antibiotics (antibiotics capable of curing many infections) and cure diseases caused by many bacteria, large viruses, protozoa, parasites and rickettsiae. These can be orally administered since they are absorbed from the gastro intestinal tract.
