Rama is the seventh avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. Vishnu descends to earth to restore dharma and protect the righteous. Brahma is the creator god, Maheswara (Shiva) is the destroyer, and Indra is the king of heavens - none of whom are Rama's origin.

In the Ramayana, King Janaka of Mithila possessed the divine bow of Lord Shiva. He declared that whoever could string this heavy bow would marry Sita. Rama, the avatar of Vishnu, not only strung it but snapped it in two, proving his divine strength.

In the Ramayana, Lakshmana was born to Queen Sumitra, the second wife of King Dasharatha. Kaikeyi was Bharata's mother, Kausalya was Rama's mother, and Manthara was Kaikeyi's maid who influenced her to demand Rama's exile.
