The Mahabharata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, is traditionally attributed to the sage Veda Vyasa (also known as Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa). He is revered as the author who compiled and composed this epic.

According to Hindu mythology, Nainital got its name from the 'Naina' (eye) of Goddess Sati. It is believed that the eye of Sati fell at this location, giving the lake its name meaning 'lake of the eye'. This makes it one of the Shakti Peeths.
