In Sanskrit, 'ayana' means journey, path, or way. Ramayana literally translates to 'Rama's Journey' - the epic story of Lord Rama's travels and adventures. This is a fundamental etymological understanding of the text.

The Valmiki Ramayana consists of approximately 24,000 verses spread across seven books (Kandas). This is the standard count for the Sanskrit epic composed by Valmiki.

According to Hindu tradition, the Ramayana events take place in the Treta Yuga, the second of the four Yugas in Hindu cosmology. The Mahabharata occurs later in the Dvapara Yuga.

The Ramayana is divided into seven Kandas (books): Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yuddha Kanda, and Uttara Kanda.

Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, a dialect of Hindi spoken in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. This made the epic accessible to common people who didn't know Sanskrit.

The Uttara Kanda describes events after Rama's return to Ayodhya, including the birth of Lava and Kusha (Sita's twin sons) who were raised in Valmiki's ashram, Sita's exile, and other concluding events.

Manthara, the hunchbacked maid servant of Kaikeyi, is primarily responsible for engineering Rama's exile. She manipulated Kaikeyi by reminding her of the king's two boons and convinced her to demand Rama's 14-year exile and Bharata's coronation.

Kishkinda is the monkey kingdom mentioned in the Ramayana, located in the modern-day region of Karnataka. It served as the capital of the vanara (monkey) kingdom where Sugriva ruled and Hanuman served as a minister.

Lord Rama is revered as the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hinduism. He incarnated to destroy the demon king Ravana and establish dharma (righteousness) on earth.

Virgin Comics released a comic adaptation called Ramayana 3292 AD (not BC), which reimagines the epic in a futuristic science fiction setting.
