During the Mesozoic era, specifically the Jurassic period approximately 200 million years ago, gymnosperms were the dominant land plants before the rise of angiosperms.

Gymnosperms are defined as seed-bearing vascular plants where the seeds are not enclosed within an ovary or fruit. Bryophytes lack vascular tissue, and pteridophytes do not produce seeds.

Gymnosperms, particularly cycads, are known for having the largest ovules and the largest male gametes among seed plants. They also include some of the largest tree species.
