The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.

The Security Council has primary responsibility under the Charter for maintaining peace and security. It can be convened at any time, whenever peace is threatened. Member States are obligated to carry out its decisions. When a threat to peace is brought before the Council, it usually first asks the parties to reach agreement by peaceful means. If fighting breaks out, the Council tries to secure a ceasefire. It may then send peacekeeping missions to troubled areas or call for economic sanctions and embargoes to restore peace.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the UN’s main judicial organ. The Court settles legal disputes between nations only and not between individuals, in accordance with international law. The seat of the International Court of Justice is at The Hague in the Netherlands. 

The Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members: China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The other 10 are elected by the General Assembly on the basis of geographical representation for two-year terms.

The first Secretary General of the United Nations was Trygve Lie appointed in 1946. He was a Norwegian.

The veto power held by permanent members of the UN Security Council is often criticized because it allows these nations to block resolutions that conflict with their national interests, thereby influencing the UN to align with their decisions.
