The main arena of various types of cellular activities is the cytoplasm. Cytoplasm represents a bulk of protoplasm excluding nucleus and vacuoles. The inner part of cytoplasm is called as endoplasm and it is usually in perpetual motion called cyclosis or cytoplasmic streaming. Cytoplasm has various types of cell organelles. Cell organelles are highly organized subcellular protoplasmic structures that have a distinctive shape, chemical composition and function.

Cytoplasm can be defined as a thick solution that fills each cell and is enclosed by the cell membrane. It is mainly composed of water, salts and proteins. In eukaryotic cells, the cytoplasm includes all of the material inside the cell and outside of the nucleus. The cytoplasm is about 80% water and it is usually colourless.

The semicircular tube like structures present in the cytoplasm are Endoplasmic reticulum.

Basically cytoplasm is the substance that fills the cell.It is a jelly like substance and it is made up of eighty percent water and is usually clear and colourless.It is thought that the component molecules and structures of the cytoplasm behave at times like a disordered colloidal solution(sol) and at other times like an integrated network,forming a solid mass (gel).This theory thus proposes that the cytoplasm exists in distinct fluid and solid phases depending on the level of interaction between cytoplasmic components.Cytoplasm also constitutes numerous salts and is a very good conductor of electricity.

The cytoplasm comprises cytosol and the organelles. Organelles are usually membrane bound structures inside the cell that have specific functions. Some major organelles that are suspended in the cytosol are the mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, vacuoles, lysosomes and in plant cells chloroplasts.

Kernplasm theory was proposed by O. Hertwig. According to the theory, during the life period of a cell, a constant ratio exist between cytoplasmic and nuclear masses and this maintains equilibrium between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.

Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance present in all cells. All of the cell organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm and perform life sustaining activities and thus cytoplasm is called as living fluid.
