Telugu is called the 'Italian of the East' because it is the only language other than Italian where most words end in a vowel. The 16th-century Italian traveler Niccolò de' Conti made this observation after traveling to South India. This phonetic characteristic gives Telugu its distinctive melodic quality. This is a well-documented linguistic observation in historical accounts.

According to Ethnologue and other linguistic sources, there are approximately 7,100-7,150 living languages spoken in the world today. The figure 'more than 2,700' is significantly understated but technically true - 7,000+ is indeed more than 2,700. The statement is factual, though the threshold seems unusually low. Perhaps this was written when estimates were closer to 3,000-4,000 languages.

English has the largest vocabulary of any language, estimated at over 170,000 words in current use and over 250,000 distinct words including obsolete terms. This is due to its history of borrowing from Latin, French, Germanic languages, and many other sources. While German and French have extensive vocabularies, and Hindi is rich in its own right, English's global reach and hybrid nature gives it the largest lexicon.
