World Landmarks and Heritage

Machu Picchu is the only Wonder of the World located in Peru. This 15th-century Incan citadel is set high in the Andes Mountains and is renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls and astronomical alignments. The Colosseum is in Rome, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and Chichen Itza in Mexico.

Damascus is widely recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with evidence of settlement dating back over 11,000 years. While Jericho and Plovdiv are also very ancient, Damascus is the most commonly accepted answer in general knowledge quizzes. Quebec was founded much later in the 17th century, and Hamoukar, while ancient, is less frequently cited as the oldest city.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is part of the Giza Necropolis on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) was buried there around 2560 BC. The Giza pyramids are among the most famous landmarks of ancient Egypt.

The Panama Canal was constructed across the Isthmus of Panama, a narrow strip of land connecting North and South America. The canal cuts through this land bridge to create a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Machu Picchu's name derives from Quechua words meaning "Old Peak" or "Old Mountain," perfectly matching the description. Stonehenge is in England, the Maya ruins are in Central America, and the Colosseum is in Rome - none are in Peru.

The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built. The Maya ruins are temple complexes, Stonehenge is a stone circle, and Machu Picchu was an Incan citadel - none were amphitheatres.

Petra derives from the Greek word "petra" meaning "rock," and this ancient Nabataean city is famously located in Jordan. Sigiriya is in Sri Lanka, Cappadocia is in Turkey, and Malinalco is in Mexico.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only remaining ancient wonder of the world still standing today. It was also designated as an Honorary Candidate of the New Seven Wonders of the World initiative. All other ancient wonders have been destroyed over time.

Chichen Itza is the Mayan pyramid complex in Yucatan, Mexico. Petra is in Jordan, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA.

The Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt contains over 70 tombs of pharaohs and nobles from the New Kingdom period. It is a major archaeological site.

Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world. It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu before transforming into a Buddhist temple.

The Great Wall of China is NOT one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ancient wonders are: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Great Wall is sometimes listed as a modern wonder.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Pisa, Italy. It's the campanile (bell tower) of Pisa Cathedral. The tower leans because the soft ground on one side couldn't properly support its weight during construction.
