World Geography and Politics

The Dutch East Indies was the colonial name for Indonesia under Dutch rule. After Indonesia gained independence in 1945, the country adopted its current name. West Indies, India, and Bangladesh are all distinct geographical entities.

Persia was the historical name for the region that officially became Iran in 1935. The name Iran means 'land of the Aryans' in Persian. Iraq and Kuwait are separate countries in the Middle East, while Israel is not related to the ancient Persian empire.

Bhutan is known as 'Land of Thunderbolt' (Druk Yul in Dzongkha). The name comes from the violent thunderstorms of the Himalayas and the Buddhist deity Dorje (Vajra/thunderbolt). Myanmar and Burma are the same country.

Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar) is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. Erdenet, Altai, and Ulaangom are other cities in Mongolia.

The 123 Agreement is officially known as the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement. The term '123 Agreement' comes from Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act, which governs civilian nuclear cooperation agreements. This landmark 2008 agreement allowed nuclear trade between India and the United States.

The G5 (Outreach Five) included Brazil, China, India, and Mexico, along with South Africa as the fifth member representing Africa. These five emerging economies were invited to engage with the G8 in summit meetings. Pakistan and Egypt were not part of this group.

The McMahon Line is the demarcation line between India and China, agreed upon in the 1914 Simla Convention between British India and Tibet. Myanmar is not a member of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation). The current members are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan. Myanmar is located in South Asia but has not joined SAARC.
