Biology and Science Terminology

Oncology is the study of cancer.

Karyology (from Greek 'karyon' meaning nut/kernel) is specifically the study of the nucleus, including its structure, function, and abnormalities. Cytology is the broader study of cells, histopathology studies tissues, and paleontology studies fossils.

Ornithology is the branch of zoology that focuses on the study of birds, including their behavior, physiology, classification, and ecology. The term comes from the Greek words 'ornis' (bird) and 'logos' (study).

Demography is the scientific study of human populations, including their size, distribution, and changes over time. Sociology studies social behavior, orthography deals with spelling systems, and haplography is a misspelling.

Myology is the branch of anatomy that specifically studies the muscular system, including muscle structure, function, development, and diseases. This field examines the approximately 600 muscles in the human body, how they contract to produce movement, and their role in maintaining posture and generating heat. In contrast, osteology studies bones, odontology studies teeth, and onychology studies nails - none of which are related to myology.

Ecology is the scientific study of the relationship that living organisms have with respect to each other and their natural environment. Variables of interest to ecologists include the composition, distribution, amount (biomass), number, and changing states of organisms within and among ecosystems.

Limnology is the study of inland waters. This includes the study of lakes and ponds, rivers, springs, streams and wetlands.

Ethology is the  branch of zoology that studies the behaviour of animals in their natural habitats.

Genetics is the branch of biology studying heredity (passing traits from parents to offspring) and variation (differences between individuals). Embryology studies embryo development, plant breeding applies genetic principles, and physiology studies organism functions.

Acoustics is the branch of physics that studies the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of sound. Botany studies plants, virology studies viruses, and zoology studies animals - none of these relate to sound.

An examination of a body after death to determine the cause of death or the character and extent of changes produced by disease is called autopsy.

Neonatology is the medical specialty focused on the care of newborn infants, particularly those who are ill or born prematurely. The term specifically refers to the study and treatment of newborn babies up to 28 days old, though care can extend through the first few months of life.

Oology is the scientific study of eggs, particularly bird eggs. It focuses on their structure, formation, and development within zoology and ornithology.

Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions or epigraphs on durable materials like stone, clay, or metal. Angiography and endoscopy are medical imaging techniques; epidermal relates to skin.

Nomology is the study of law-making or the science of laws. It deals with the principles and methodology of creating laws. The other options refer to different fields of study.
