International Organizations

UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It was established in 1946 to help children affected by World War II and continues to work for children's rights globally.

IAEA is the International Atomic Energy Agency, established in 1957 to promote peaceful use of nuclear energy and prevent nuclear weapons proliferation.

IFAD is the International Fund for Agricultural Development, established in 1977 to finance agricultural development projects in developing countries.

ILO is the International Labour Organization, founded in 1919 to set international labor standards and promote decent work conditions globally. Note the British spelling 'Labour'.

ITU is the International Telecommunication Union, the oldest UN agency (founded 1865), coordinating global telecommunication standards and policies.

UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, established to promote world peace through collaboration in education, science, and culture.

UNIDO is the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, focused on promoting industrial development and inclusive globalization in developing countries.

UPU is the Universal Postal Union, established in 1874 to coordinate international postal policies among member nations and ensure universal postal service.

WB stands for World Bank, an international financial institution providing loans and grants to governments in developing countries for capital programs.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has its headquarters in Rome, Italy. The FAO is a specialized agency of the UN focused on food security and agriculture. The World Food Programme is also in Rome, but FAO is the classic Rome-based UN agency. ILO is in Geneva, and EFTA is in Geneva.

INTERPOL is the international intelligence agency formed through joint venture of most countries worldwide. Founded in 1923, it facilitates cross-border police cooperation and criminal intelligence sharing among 195 member countries.

Saudi Arabia was one of the five founding members of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) in 1960, along with Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Venezuela. OPEC coordinates petroleum policies among member countries to ensure stable oil markets.

The UAE was indeed one of the six founding members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), established in 1981 in Abu Dhabi. The GCC promotes economic, political, and security cooperation among Persian Gulf states. OPEC was formed earlier (1960) and while UAE is a member, it was not a founding member.

The UN Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly based on the recommendation of the Security Council. While the Security Council recommends the candidate, the formal appointment is made by the General Assembly. This is a key appointment process in the UN system requiring both bodies to act.
