Indian States and Union Territories

Assam (Asom in Assamese) means "unequalled, peerless, or uneven" referring to the unique terrain of the Brahmaputra valley. The name reflects the distinctive topography created by the mighty Brahmaputra river that flows through the state. Assam is renowned for its tea gardens, rich biodiversity, and the one-horned rhinoceros.

Haryana derives from two Sanskrit words: Hari (God) and ana (home), meaning "Abode of God". The name reflects the state's strong religious heritage, particularly its association with the epic Mahabharata and the ancient Kurukshetra region. Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966 and is a major agricultural hub.

The name Karnataka is derived from 'Karu' meaning 'lofty' and 'Nadu' meaning 'land/region', referring to the elevated Deccan Plateau region. This etymological meaning gives Karnataka the epithet 'Lofty land'. The state's geography features the high-altitude Deccan Plateau.

Maharashtra is known as 'Maha' (great) and 'Rashtra' (nation), meaning 'Great Nation'. The name reflects the state's historical significance, large size, cultural influence, and political importance. Maharashtra has been a major center of Maratha empire and Indian independence movement.

Jharkhand's name is derived from 'Jhar' meaning forest and 'Khand' meaning region, translating to 'land of forest or low forest'. The state has significant forest cover, particularly in the Chotanagpur Plateau region. The name reflects the state's rich forest resources and tribal heritage.

Arunachal Pradesh was known as the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) during British colonial rule and until 1972. The name reflected its status as a frontier administrative region in the northeastern border. It was renamed Arunachal Pradesh when it became a union territory and later a state.

Puducherry is a Union Territory located within Tamil Nadu, though it has exclaves in other states. The main territory is on the Tamil Nadu coast.

AP is the standard two-letter abbreviation for Andhra Pradesh, a state in southern India. The other options are states but have different abbreviations: Arunachal Pradesh (AR), Assam (AS), and Bihar (BR).
