Indian Literature and Texts

Sangam literature refers to the ancient Tamil literature produced during the Sangam period, which lasted from approximately 300 BCE to 300 CE.

The Rig Veda is the oldest of the four Vedas. It consists of a collection of hymns dedicated to various deities.

Aranyakas are the concluding parts of the Brahmanas and are known as 'Forest Books' because they were intended to be studied by hermits in the forest.

The Aitareya Brahmana describes the king as a 'devourer of the people' (visamattah) and also as a 'protector of the people' (brahmagopta).

The Sama Veda is primarily a collection of melodies and chants derived from the Rig Veda for liturgical purposes. Because it is almost entirely musical in nature, it provides very little historical information compared to the other Vedas.

Aranyakas are known as forest books and serve as the bridge between the ritualistic Brahmanas (Way of Work) and the philosophical Upanishads (Way of Knowledge).

Later Vedic literature generally refers to the texts composed after the Rig Veda, which include the Atharva Veda, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas, and the Upanishads.

The Yajur Veda is considered the oldest prose literature of the Aryans, as it contains prose mantras used in sacrificial rituals, unlike the poetic Rig Veda.

The Battle of Ten Kings (Dasharajna) is described in the seventh Mandala of the Rig Veda.

The Atharva Veda contains references to various social customs, including early mentions of symbolic practices related to widowhood.

The Atharva Veda is distinct from the other three Vedas because it contains hymns, charms, and spells for healing, protection, and warding off evil spirits.

The Tripitaka (called Tipitaka in Pali) is the earliest collection of Buddhist writings.
