Indian Independence Movement

George Yule was the first English President of INC in 1888 ( Allahabad session). William Wedderburn was Scottish (president in 1889, 1910). A O Hume was Scottish (founder, not president). Henry Cotton was also English but became president later in 1904.

K. R. Narayanan, India's 10th President, is Kocheril Raman Narayanan. He was the first Dalit President and had a distinguished diplomatic career. The initials K.R. stand for Kocheril Raman, not the other variants listed.

V.V. Giri, India's fourth President, participated in the Irish freedom struggle while studying in Ireland and was imprisoned for his activities. He was influenced by the Irish independence movement. Radhakrishnan was a philosopher-diplomat, Sanjiva Reddy was a politician, and Nanda served briefly as interim Prime Minister but was not President.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served as the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. He was a renowned philosopher and scholar before becoming President, and his birthday is celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.

V.V. Giri served as Acting President after Zakir Hussain's death in 1969 (and later became full President). B.D. Jatti was Acting President after Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's death in 1977. Mohammad Hidayatullah served as Acting President twice - in 1969 before Giri's appointment and in 1977 before Jatti's. Zakir Hussain was a full President, not an Acting President.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of independent India, serving from 1950 to 1962. He was a prominent freedom fighter and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi before being elected to India's highest constitutional office by the Constituent Assembly.

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan's birthday on September 5 is celebrated as Teachers Day in India. He was a philosopher and India's second President. Teachers Day honors teachers and his belief that teachers should be the best minds in the country.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of independent India, serving from 1950 to 1962. He was a key leader in the independence movement and a close associate of Gandhi.

William Gopallawa was the first President of Sri Lanka, serving from 1972 to 1978. He became president when Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) became a republic in 1972.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh, serving in 1971. He led the independence movement and is considered the founding father of Bangladesh.

Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee (spelled variously as Wyomesh Chandra Bannerjee) was the first president of the Indian National Congress in 1885. AO Hume was the founder-organizer but not the president. Dadabhai Naoroji became president later (1886, 1893, 1906).

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was indeed the President of INC - he was elected President in 1938 (Haripura session) and again in 1939 (Tripuri session). His presidency was marked by ideological differences with Gandhi, leading to his resignation and formation of the Forward Bloc.

General K.M. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949 after independence, succeeding the last British incumbent.

Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari was the first Indian to command the Indian Navy as Commander-in-Chief from 1958-1961. He succeeded the last British commander.
