Indian Educational and Cultural Institutes

Neal Duggal from Bangalore, Jesika Haria from Mumbai and Rudrajit Banerjee from Kolkata - on February 3, 2010 became the first students selected for the 2010 Manmohan Singh Undergraduate Scholarship administered by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, a charity organization established by the University of Cambridge. The scholarships have been funded through the UK based Eranda Foundation and Bharti Airtel's Bharti Foundation. Manmohan Singh graduated from the university a First in Economics in the late 1950s, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University in 2006.

The Presidency College, Kolkata becomes Presidency University: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly on March 20, 2010 passed the Bill to confer university status to Presidency College. The institute was originally founded as Hindoo College in 1817 and renamed as Presidency College in 1855.

The Centenary Auditorium is located at Madras University (University of Madras) in Chennai. It's a significant venue where various official events, including award ceremonies for financial institutions like Indian Bank, have been held. Delhi University, University of Calcutta, and Mumbai University have their own auditoriums but not the Centenary Auditorium.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was established in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in 1909 and continues to be located there. It is one of India's premier research institutions. Chennai (A), New Delhi (C), and Kharagpur (D) host IITs but not IISc.

Aligarh Muslim University is a central university under the Act of Parliament, giving it special status and national funding. Panjab University and H.P. University are state universities governed by their respective state governments. Indraprastha University (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) is also a state university of Delhi.

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) comprises the National Institute of Education in New Delhi, the Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET, formerly Centre of Educational Technology), and five Regional Institutes of Education (RIE, formerly Regional Colleges of Education). The Regional Institute of English is not part of the NCERT structure.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is located in Delhi, not Patna, Anandpur Sahib, or Chandigarh. It is a state university established by the Government of NCT of Delhi. While it has strong technical programs, it is not exclusively devoted to technical studies as it offers programs in various disciplines.

Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute in Chennai conferred an honorary doctorate on Sania Mirza, recognizing her achievements in tennis and her contribution to Indian sports.

The Andhra Pradesh Open University, established in 1982 in Hyderabad, was the first open university in India. It was later renamed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University.

Nalanda University, located in ancient Magadha (modern Bihar), was a world-renowned center of learning from the 5th century CE. It is considered the first major residential university in India's history.

Taxila (or Takshashila) is considered the oldest university in the world, dating back to approximately 700 BCE. It was a major hub of Vedic and Buddhist learning located in modern-day Pakistan.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is responsible for the 'Countrywide Classroom' initiative, which telecasts higher education programs. While NCERT focuses on school education and IGNOU on distance learning, the UGC specifically targets university-level content.

The Indian Education Commission (1964-66), popularly known as the Kothari Commission, formally recommended the 10+2+3 structure to create a uniform pattern of education across the country. While the Calcutta University Commission of 1917 had suggested an intermediate stage, the full three-tier scheme was the hallmark of the Kothari recommendations.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is widely recognized as one of the largest universities in the world by enrollment.
