Traditional Indian Arts and Crafts

Jaimini Roy made his name in the field of painting. For his artistic skill, he was honoured with Padmabushan award in the year 1955. He is from west Bengal of India.

Natraj, in the Hindu religion, depicts a form of the dancing Lord Shiva and symbolizes Shakti, or life force. It has international significance from the point of view of arts. Carl Sagan drew the metaphor between the cosmic dance of the Nataraj and the modern study of the 'cosmic dance' of subatomic particles.
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. It has a statue of Natraj in its compound. The plaque alongside the statue explains the belief is that Lord Shiva danced the Universe into existence, motivates it, and will eventually extinguish it.

The four goals of life (Purusharthas) in Indian philosophy are Dharma (duty/righteousness), Artha (prosperity), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation).

Historically, the vast majority of Indian art, including sculpture, architecture, and painting, was created to serve religious purposes or express religious themes.

Chandbardai was known for his excellence in poetry. Chandrabai was a court poet of Prithvi Raj Chauhan. He was born in Lahore in the year 1148. He acquired immense knowledge of language, literature, grammar, puranas, astrology etc. The famous creation of Chandbardai is Prithviraj Raso. It is considered to be the first epic in Hindi. 

Tholu Bommalata is the shadow puppet theatre tradition of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The puppets are large in size and have joints. They are coloured on both sides. The music is dominantly influenced by the classical music of the region and the theme of the puppet plays are drawn from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas.

The earliest reference to the art of puppetry is found in Tamil classic Silappadikaaram written around the 1st or 2nd cent B.C. It was written by Jain-poet, Ilango Adigal. The excavation sites at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro have yielded puppets with sockets attached to them, which suggest the presence of puppetry as an art form then.

Bandhani is a traditional tie-dye technique that often features diverse patterns, including geometric shapes like dice, as well as various animal and puppet motifs.

Surat, in Gujarat, is historically and currently famous for its extensive Zari industry and traditional weaving crafts.

Murals are large paintings applied directly to a wall or ceiling. The Ajanta caves are famous for these ancient Buddhist wall paintings.

The Gupta Period is widely regarded as the 'Golden Age' of Indian history, during which art, architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, and music flourished immensely.

Sculpture is the art of carving, shaping, or fashioning three-dimensional figures or designs on stone, wood, or metal using tools like a chisel and hammer.

Ancient Indians made significant advancements in metallurgy, allowing them to forge strong iron tools such as plows, which greatly improved agricultural productivity. Other options like texts, sitars, and paintings are made of organic materials like paper, wood, and pigments rather than metal.

Indian miniature paintings, especially those from the Mughal and Rajput schools, frequently depicted scenes of daily life, court activities, and hunting. While religious and mythological themes were also common, daily life remains one of the most widely represented subjects in these detailed artworks. Political and supernatural themes were less central.
