Historical Explorations and Expeditions

David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer . He was one of the greatest European explorers of Africa. He reached to new peoples in the interior of Africa and introduce them to Christianity, as well as freeing them from slavery.

On May 20, 1498, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in Calicut what is now Kozhikode, India. Da Gama was the first European to reach the lucrative trade centers of India by sea. Da Gama's sea route to India allowed Portugal to establish a rich trade with India and southeast Asia. Thus, Portugal was able to expand its empire to include many provinces in India.

He sailed westward under favourable conditions, and on April 22 Cabral sighted the land he named Island of the True Cross. Later renamed Holy Cross by King Manuel, the country ultimately took its modern name, Brazil, from a kind of dyewood, pau-brasil, that is found there. After a stay of only 10 days in Brazil, Cabral sailed for India, on a voyage that was plagued by a series of misfortunes. 

Every European country wanted to find a sea route in order to continue their trade with the Asian country for which various expeditions were carried out. The Portuguese and the Spanish were in the forefront 

 On May 20, 1498, when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in Kozhikode, India, via the Cape of Good Hope, in the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal became the first European country to discover the new sea route to India.

Bartolomeu Diaz, who was the Portuguese explorer, discovered "Cape of Good Hope" Island on 12 March 1488. He named  it the "Cape of Storms."

Vasco De Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea. It was under King Emmanuel, Vasco de Gama started his expedition in 1497 and landed on the Indian soil (Calicut) in May 1498. He received a hero’s welcome back in Portugal, and was sent on a second expedition to India in 1502, during which he brutally clashed with Muslim traders in the region.

Orville Wright was involved in a crash in 1908 at Fort Myer, Virginia, which resulted in the death of his passenger, Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge. This is widely considered the first fatal airplane crash.

Fridtjof Nansen designed the ship Fram to withstand ice pressure and intentionally let it freeze into the Arctic pack ice in 1893 to demonstrate the existence of an east-to-west ocean current across the Arctic.
