Historical Events and Dates

The National Housing Bank (NHB) was established on July 9, 1988, under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987.

Rolling Plans were made for the period 1978 to 1983. Fifth FYP was launched and planned for period 1974-79 but Janata government came in power in 1978 and ended the plan prematurely in 1978. The Janata government launched sixth FYP for period 1978-1983. Congress government when came in power in 1980 abandoned the sixth FYP and launched a new sixth FYP for period 1980-1985. The plan for period, 1978-83, is called the rolling plan. 

Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

The nationalisation of the major commercial banks took place in 1969. The nationalisation of banks in India took place in 1969 by Mrs. Indira Gandhi the then prime minister. It nationalised 14 banks then. These banks were mostly owned by businessmen and even managed by them.  

“Operation Flood” programme was introduced in 1970. Operation Flood was a rural development programme started by India's National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970. One of the largest of its kind, the programme objective was to create a nationwide milk grid.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948.

2010 was celebrated by the UN as International Year of Biodiversity. The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. The world is invited to take action in 2010 to safeguard the variety of life on earth. 

“Convention on Biodiversity”, which was an attempt to highlight the problem of depletion of biodiversity, was convened in 1992. The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in June 1992 and became legally binding on December 29, 1993. As of December 3, 1996, 165 countries, including the European Union, had ratified the Convention. 

The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established on January 1, 1995, following the Marrakesh Agreement, replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

The first national sports festival for women in India was organized in 1975. This initiative was part of efforts to promote women's participation in sports at the national level.

The Rowlatt Act was passed by the Imperial Legislative Council in London on March 18, 1919, indefinitely extending emergency measures enacted during the First World War.

Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People's Republic of China, died on September 9, 1976.

The reunification of East and West Germany occurred on October 3, 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. This event marked the end of the Cold War division in Germany.

The Central Sales Tax (CST) was phased out as part of the transition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, with March 31, 2010, being a significant target date in that process.
