Vaikom Muhammad Basheer wrote the screenplay for Bhargavi Nilayam (1964), the first horror film in Malayalam. M.T. Vasudevan Nair is a famous writer but not associated with this film. Ramu Karyat directed Chemmeen, and Thakazhi was a novelist.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan won the National Film Award for Best Director for his debut film Swayamvaram (1972), making him the first Malayalee to receive this honor. Mathilukal, Kodiyettam, and Elippathayam are his later acclaimed works.

Padayottam (1984) was India's first indigenously produced 70 mm film. It was a Malayalam film produced by Navodaya Studio. 70 mm film offers wider aspect ratio and better picture quality compared to standard 35 mm. Swayamvaram, Thacholi Ambu, and Prayanam were significant Malayalam films but not shot on 70 mm.

Guru (1997), directed by Rajiv Anchal, was India's official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It was a Malayalam film starring Mohanlal. Piravi and Mathilukal were also acclaimed Malayalam films but not Oscar submissions. Swayamvaram was a landmark film but not an Oscar entry.
