Environmental Policy and Law

The government environmental policies are made to comprehensively check the degradation of land and water through wasteland management and to provide rules and guidelines to improve the same. Provide for programs and measures to improve the quality of river waters, and to monitor and supervise the development through Environmental Impact Assessment studies which comparatively show figures and data of work done, programs utilized and funds exhausted while drawing the attention of the government to certain neglected areas of the environment.

Its necessary to keep our society hygienic and pollution free. This can be done by prohibiting loudspeakers in public places after 10 p.m in night and dumping garbage in the rivers and cutting trees, hunting and paoching.

Noise pollution can be reduced by using silencers in vehicles, industrial machines, and home appliances reducing use of vehicle horns, running TV, radio and music systems at low volumes. Planting of trees along roads and buildings also help to reduce noise pollution.

All the steps mentioned are effective ways, among others, for preventing noise pollution.

The UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) has passed many environmental conservation acts. To create awareness of the condition, to encourage participation on public level, developing International Environmental Law etc. are its objectives.

The Clean Water Act of 1972 established the legal framework for regulating pollutant discharges into the waters of the United States and setting quality standards for surface waters.

The main objective of the Public Liability Insurance Act 1991 is to provide for damages to victims of an accident which occurs as a result of handling any hazardous substance. The Act applies to all owners associated with the production or handling of any hazardous chemicals.

Environment Protection Act, 1986 is an Act of the Parliament of India. In the wake of the Bhopal Tragedy, the Government of India enacted the Environment Protection Act of 1986 under Article 253 of the Constitution. Passed in March 1986, it came into force on 19 November 1986. The purpose of the Act is to implement the decisions of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environments they relate to the protection and improvement of the human environment and the prevention of hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plants and property. The Act is an “umbrella” legislation designed to provide a framework for central government coordination of the activities of various central and state authorities established under previous laws, such as the Water Act and the Air Act.

• Trees control atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration because they take up carbon dioxide and perform photosynthesis through which they release oxygen in the atmosphere. Hence, quality of air is maintained by ecosystems.
• The roots of plants held the soil particles tightly which prevent soil erosion.
• Plants filter out pollutants from water and air by trapping pollutants. They absorb pollutants from air and water in their tissues. 

ESP or electrostatic precipitators are used to remove dust particles from flue gas (such as gas from broilers). The dust particles present in the air get charged as they pass through the electrostatic precipitator and get collected at the collection electrode. It can, therefore, be used to remove air pollutants such as dust. 

All listed options, including forestation, clean technology, and renewable energy, are effective strategies for reducing air pollution by either absorbing pollutants or preventing their emission.

A cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. 

Air Prevention and Control of Pollution Act, 1981 is an Act of the Parliament of India to control and prevent air pollution in India. It is different from the Environment (Protection) act, 1986 and not a part of it.

The Supreme Court, under its directives, asked the government of India to switch over the entire fleet of public transport, i.e., buses, from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG). Compressed natural gas (CNG) (methane stored at high pressure) can be used in place of gasoline (petrol), diesel fuel and propane/LPG. CNG combustion produces fewer undesirable gases than the fuels mentioned above. It is safer than other fuels in the event of a spill because natural gas is lighter than air and disperses quickly when released. CNG may be found above oil deposits or may be collected from landfills or wastewater treatment plants where it is known as biogas.
