Gauche means crude and thus, coarse is synonymous.

Spartan habits refer to the disciplined, austere lifestyle of ancient Sparta - characterized by self-discipline and simplicity. 'Disciplined' fits this perfectly. 'Luxurious' is opposite, 'early rising' is too specific, and 'fearless' doesn't capture the ascetic discipline.

Clumsy means lacking skill, coordination, or grace in physical movement. Being 'unskilled' as a waiter directly matches this meaning. 'Adept' is the opposite, 'weak' suggests physical strength rather than coordination, and 'unprofessional' is about behavior not physical awkwardness.

Bland means lacking in special features or interest - dull or ordinary. A novel that's 'ordinary' or uninteresting fits this. 'Spicy' is metaphorically opposite, 'tasteless' means offensive rather than dull, and 'timid' describes personality not writing style.

Acumen means the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions, typically in a particular domain; keen insight or shrewdness. In the context of business without 'high sounding degrees,' it refers to sharpness of mind and practical wisdom - the ability to succeed through intelligence rather than formal education.

Dexterous means skillful, especially with the hands; showing or having skill, especially physically. For a plastic surgeon reconstructing facial contours, this refers to surgical skill and precision in handling delicate procedures, making 'skilful' the correct contextual meaning.

Compassion means sympathetic concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others; empathy coupled with a desire to help. Educating and helping the poor demonstrates feeling for their struggles and wanting to improve their situation, which is the essence of compassion.
