Cricket History and Tournaments

India did not win a Test series in South Africa until 2024 (and even then, it was a drawn series 1-1; their first actual series win there remains elusive in long formats). India won in New Zealand (1967), West Indies (1971), England (1971), and Australia (2018-19).

As of the mid-2010s, Sri Lanka held the record for the most World Cup losses among major cricket teams. India has historically performed better in World Cups, while Bangladesh is a relatively newer team with fewer matches, and England has mixed results.

The first international cricket match was played between the USA and Canada on September 24-25, 1844, at the St George's Cricket Club in New York. This match is recognized by cricket historians as the first official international cricket game, predating matches between traditional cricket nations. Canada won by 23 runs.

During the 1983 World Cup league stage, India defeated the West Indies in a major upset. The West Indies were heavy favorites and had won the previous two World Cups. India's victory was the only match the West Indies lost in the group stage.

In the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, Zimbabwe pulled off a major upset by defeating Australia by 5 wickets in the group stage. This remains one of the most famous results in the tournament's history. They did not beat India or England in that stage.

In the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup league stage, Sri Lanka defeated England. This was one of Sri Lanka's only two wins in that tournament. The other teams listed (Pakistan, Zimbabwe) did not lose to Sri Lanka in that tournament.

The Aiwa Cup was a triangular ODI series held in Sri Lanka in August 1999. Sri Lanka won the tournament by defeating Australia in the final by 8 wickets. India was the third team in the competition.

In the 2001-02 VB Series, Australia (the hosts) surprisingly failed to reach the best-of-three finals for the first time in 22 years. South Africa and New Zealand progressed to the final instead, which South Africa won.

In 2019, England and New Zealand tied the World Cup Final after both scoring 241 in their 50 overs, and subsequently tied the Super Over. This is the most famous high-stakes tied chase in ODI history.

Zimbabwe has never hosted the ICC Champions Trophy. Bangladesh hosted the inaugural edition in 1998, Kenya hosted in 2000, and Sri Lanka hosted in 2002. Zimbabwe has hosted World Cup matches but not this specific tournament.

The 2004 Asia Cup included Test-playing nations (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh) and two Associate teams. UAE and Hong Kong were invited as Associate members of the ICC to participate in the tournament. China does not have a major cricket presence, while Sri Lanka is a Test-playing nation.

In the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, Group 4 consisted of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands (Holland). Sri Lanka and Holland played each other in the opening match.

Pakistan's only group-stage loss in the 1999 Cricket World Cup was against Bangladesh, which was considered a massive upset at the time as Bangladesh was not yet a Test-playing nation. This victory helped establish Bangladesh's credentials on the international cricket stage and preceded their gaining Test status in 2000.

The Frank Worrell Trophy is contested between Australia and the West Indies in Test cricket. It was named after Sir Frank Worrell, the first great West Indian captain, and was established in 1960-61 to commemorate the first Test series between the two nations.
