Chennai has been the capital of Tamil Nadu since the state's creation as Madras State, later renamed in 1969. It is the state's largest city and administrative center. Erode, Sivakasi, and Coimbatore are major industrial/commercial cities but not capitals - Coimbatore is often called the 'Manchester of South India'.
