Chennai (formerly Madras) is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and one of India's major metropolitan cities. It is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Coimbatore, Trichy (Tiruchirappalli), and Madurai are important cities in Tamil Nadu but not the state capital. Chennai is also a major cultural, economic, and educational center in South India.
