In February 1991, Tamil Nadu came under President's rule after the dismissal of the DMK government led by M. Karunanidhi. This was a period of central government rule in the state. J. Jayalalithaa and O. Panneerselvam were from the AIADMK faction, while Karunanidhi was from DMK.
