In the Ramayana, Mareecha (also spelled Maricha), a demon who could shape-shift, helped Ravana kidnap Sita. He took the form of a beautiful golden deer to lure Rama and Lakshmana away from their hermitage, leaving Sita unprotected. When Rama pursued the deer and wounded it, it imitated Rama's voice to call for help, deceiving Lakshmana as well.
