The Red Cross was founded by Henry Dunant (also spelled Henri Dunant), a Swiss businessman who was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed after the Battle of Solferino in 1859. His vision led to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863 and the adoption of the First Geneva Convention. Dunant received the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
