Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman, founded the Red Cross in 1863 after witnessing the suffering of wounded soldiers at the Battle of Solferino. His experiences led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Dunant was co-recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for this humanitarian work.
